RE: Chevy lift points

booster - I would be a little hesitant to lift the front by only one point or lifting the rear only by the center of the differential. Might be fine for a pickup, but these Class B or Class C motorhomes weigh considerably more. My front axle weighs 3,260 and my rear axle weighs 5,760. Your manual may have taken that into account. If I am at home with a floor jack and jack stands, it really is not that difficult to lift the front by one wheel location and use a jack stand and then lift the other front wheel. Also a little safer. If I am on the road and have a flat, will only lift that one wheel location - not much of an issue.

RE: Calgon water softener for the Geo method

I have looked for the Calgon water softener called for in the Geo method of black tank treatment, but I can't find it. It is probably available in parts of the country where hard water is more common...Any other ideas?As has been stated already, just go to the laundry section of your favorite grocery store and find a water softener. I doubt there is a difference between powder or liquid. Calgon was the most well known brand. I buy the laundry soap (the one with the most smell) there also. The idea is to make your waste tanks act a little like a miniature clothes washers. loving retirement - When the toilet paper or whatever has dried and firmly attached itself to your sensors, it may take dynamite to shake it loose. Are you sure your sensors are working. Many times you can see the wires attached to the outside of your tank. Are they all connected and tight? The Geo method is all I have ever used and (cross my fingers) has kept my sensors working and no unpleasant odors from either tank. I keep the laundry supplies under the sink along with an empty pecante sauce bottle. I use the empty bottle to mix a cap of Calgon and Laundry soap and water. Shake and pour into the stool and a little dab into the sink. *deleted part of the quote.

We had a chance to see the IQDL with the rear slide at a dealer in Denver. We tried operating the slide in and out to see how the bed would work. The cushion on the one we saw was in two pieces. It was rather awkward in how it functioned. It appeared to us that you would need to completely strip the bed before bringing in the slide and then make it up after sliding it out.

Welcome Disalvo We have an '05 TL 213 B+, but it has only 26,000 miles in 3.5 years. Our biggest mod was to replace the 24" TV with an enclosed shelves (documented in the B+ Motorhomes thread that Gene mentioned). BTW, Gene, what number are we on that TL B+ list?The spreadsheet has a column where I record the date I first spotted a new owner of the Trail-Lite. So...if I sort on that column, you are number 52. I usually have the file sorted by the name of the poster to quickly find what they own and where from. Wish we heard more from some of the other members. I know some have traded for other brands and some have sold and not replaced. Disalvo - nice job of explaining what improvements you have made. I like your idea of an electric plug underneath with a heat tape plugged in and a toggle switch in the coach for turning on the plug.

RE: Is 108k too many miles??

We have the opportunity to purchase a 2001 21 ft Class C for a great price from a relative who lives in another state--the only issue is it has 108k miles. It is on a Chevy 3500 Chassis with a Vortex 454 engine...My previous unit was a Class A with a Chevy 454 that had over 103,000 miles when I sold it. The engine was the shining star of the motorhome. Would sit all winter and then fire up on the first cylinder to ignite in the spring. Liked gasoline, but it was much longer than the 21' you are considering. There is a topic B+ motorhomes started by a gentlemen in Texas. He bought something exactly like you are considering. Last I knew he had over a 100k miles and he still loved the power and driveability. You can fix anything your money can buy. The trick is to pay enough to own the unit, but not so much you hate to spend money on the fixes.

I am not sure if all 17.5 rims are the same or not. Someone put 17.5's on the dual rears of my old 1 ton wrecker and they do well. However if one goes flat it has to be taken off the truck to reinflate as they have no saftey type bead on the rim and when deflated they break loose at the bead and "flop" on the wheel...LarryYou bring up something that I am not aware of in todays' world. My Dad bought a new 1949 Chevy 1 ton pickup with 17.5" rims. They were split rims without a safety bead. The rims were not what they called "drop center" so the rim was split into two parts like the big 22" semi tires. Those are the type that if the lock ring is not placed properly explode with enough force to kill. Large truck tire places always have the cages they use for inflating the the split rims.

I'm not sure if I can really understand why this would be something to consider doing. The small change in diameter does mean about a 2% change in circumference. So...a very slight change in gear ratio and odometer/speedometer readings. Since the rim size is bigger, that means the amount of flexible rubber must be less. With additional air pressure in the tire to gain the extra load carrying ability, I would expect a somewhat harsher ride. My conclusion is that it would be a wise move only if you were approaching the load limit of the 16", if the selection of 17.5" tires is greater, or lesser expensive. I rather doubt the last two.

...did you try with another email address? I just went back from what I assume is the same email address and just poked a different state in and it accepted it. bumpybumpy - I suspect you are correct, but how many RV'ers are going to do that (intentionally slanting a unit one way or the other)? I tend to believe all people are honest until they prove otherwise. As was stated earlier, the more reviews - the less effect of the slanted ones.

Spectramac - With over 20,400 views of this topic, you have to know there is a lot of interest in your project. As to the insulation, an insulator once told me not to pack it tightly. Good fit is okay. Dead air space is a better insulator than a solid which can conduct temperature. Thermopane windows are better insulators than thicker panes of glass.

ron.dittmer - Thank you for starting this topic. It does get you looking in certain directions. Besides what others have pointed out, you do need to look at the number of reviews. For example, the brand "Nu-Wa" currently has 128 reviews with a total score of 71. This might be a better indicator than the brand "Len-Dar" having a total score of 75, but only 1 review. Sorry, I have a degree in mathematics with several statistical analysis courses.

disalvo1 - Just found your posting today, and noticed you are a new member. Welcome to this forum. There are at least 85 owners of the Trail-Lite by RVision (now owned by Monaco) who have posted to the B+ motorhome topic. I merely kept track of who they were and what model for my own benefit. It is a 184 page topic that provides a lot of different viewpoints and sometimes just chit-chat. Most have not done extensive modifications. I would be more than interested in what you have done. You are now member number 86.

Dugan7 - It sounds like the mechanics you have used so far are just replacing parts. Can you reproduce the symptom? Have you been able to figure out something that happened each time just prior to the brakes dragging? Something like going down a steep hill when you were resting your foot on the brake to keep the speed down? Dragging the pads for two miles can heat things up. Or bad front wheel bearings? It certainly acts like heat is the problem, because after it cools - things are normal. How did you determine it was the front wheels? Were the hubs very hot? Careful touching brake components when it happens again - they can be almost red hot. The problem could be as simple as a non-fully retracting emergency brake. How often do you use the emergency brake?

4kids4me - You might be surprised that you can replace your rear bumper with one that looks quite a bit different. I owned a 1977 Coachman Class A that the previous owner replaced both the front and back bumpers with aluminum ones from the front of a Kenworth semi. He was a truck driver and wanted that look. Actually looked quite nice - made the motorhome command attention. I would try the recondition route if a facility exists near you. Or go with something like this Rear bumper on a LAZY DAZE .

RE: Tag axle vs dually in a 22' motorhome

I do not have any experience with tag axles, so my comments are a little slanted. I love the duals as they seem to provide side to side stability. Years ago, I owned a 1971 Dodge Champion motorhome with single wheels on the rear and it seemed a little squirrly (<--is that a word?) around curves and when meeting semi's. On the straight and level it drove great. The only negative on duallies versus singles is paying for an extra two tires. You usually replace them before you wear them out. Tag axles are not very common; I've only seen a couple units. I could imagine that, on a shorter wheelbase, the tires would experience excessive side loading in very sharp turns. And...they may not give you the stability side to side. Like I said, don't have any first hand knowledge of this.
